Chapter 30.4, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine: The importance of phylogeny in deducing the novel medicines from seed plants.

Concept introduction: Phylogeny depicts the evolutionary relationship among a group of organisms. It describes how a group of organisms evolved with the time. The relationship among a group of organisms is depicted through a phylogenetic tree. The phylogeny can be deduced using either the DNA sequence or morphology.

There are various terms used in study of phylogenetic tree namely monophyletic, paraphyletic and polyphyletic. The monophyletic taxon refers to a clade that contains all the descendants of a common ancestor. A paraphyletic clade contains descendants from a common ancestor but not all the descendents. On the other hand, the polyphyletic is a clade that contains descendants from more than one common ancestor.

Clausen and colleagues proposed two hypotheses to explainthis variation within a species: (1) There are genetic differencesbetween populations of plants found at different elevations.(2) The species has developmental flexibility and can assumetall or short growth forms, depending on local abiotic factors. If you had seeds from yarrow plants found at low and highelevations, how would you test these hypotheses?
Constructing a Phylogenetic Tree Now, you are going to create and the interpret your own phylogenetic tree. Take a look at the characteristics for these organisms. Plant Group Photosynthesis? Seeds? Water-conducting Tissue? Flowers? Ferns X Gymnosperms Mosses Angiosperms Using the characteristics from the table above, determine where each of these organisms belongs on the tree below, then answer the questions. A В What characteristic appears just before group C branches off (the starred location)? flowers water conducting tissue seeds O photosynthesis
