Chapter 31, Problem 27P
SSM In an oscillating series RLC circuit, show that ΔU/U, the fraction of the energy lost per cycle of oscillation, is given to a close approximation by 2πR/ωL. The quantity ωL/R is often called the Q of the circuit (for quality). A high-Q circuit has Low resistance and a low fractional energy loss (= 2π/Q) per cycle.

In an RLC series circuit, L = 1H, R = 42,
C = 0.5F and the voltage in a circuit is
V(t) = 2 cos 2t volts. The charge q on a
plate of a condenser is given by the
differential equation
dq
L + R + q = V(t). Solve the
dt2
differential equation for q
An LRC-series circuit has the following parameters L = 1/2 h, R = 30,C = 1/1700 f. Find the charge q = q(t) on the capacitor if E(t) = 170V , q(0) = 5.1 C and q0(0) = 0. Please find q(t) by finding the general solution of DE for q(t) and using the initial conditions.
A series circuit consists of a resistor and capacitor of resistance R ohms and capacitance C Farads. It has the battery as a source of E volts. When the switch is closed the capacitor begins to charge and the total charge on the capacitor at any time q (t) is governed by: dq(t)/dt+(1/RC)q(t)=E/R where R, C, E are taken as constant. Find the charge q (t) across the capacitor at any time t. Hence show that as t → ∞, E = q(t)/c
(Note that at t=0,q(t)=0)
