Chapter 31, Problem 9QP
Exchange Rate Risk Suppose your company imports computer motherboards from Singapore. The exchange rate is given in Figure 31.1. You have just placed an order for 30,000 motherboards at a cost to you of 141.30 Singapore dollars each. You will pay for the shipment when it arrives in 90 days. You can sell the motherboards for $115 each. Calculate your profit if the exchange rate goes up or down by 10 percent over the next 90 days. What is the break-even exchange rate? What percentage rise or fall does this represent in terms of the Singapore dollar versus the U.S. dollar?

Hedging using forward rates:
Assume the hypothetical spot rate between the JPY and USD was 101.25 JPY per USD. Suppose you are purchasing 2000000 JPY worth of microprocessors deliverable (product and payment) in 3 months with the contract set up between you and your supplier on Friday. How much is that shipment worth in USD. Assume that you want to hedge against exchange rate risk, and go to the bank. The financial specialist at the bank gives you the official 3 month forward rate at 101.18 JPY per USD. What does that imply for your payment to the bank in 3 months?

Assume the hypothetical spot rate between the USD and GBP was 1.6187 USD per GBP. Suppose you are purchasing 200000 GBP worth of Scotch Whisky deliverable (product and payment) in 3 months with the contract set up between you and your supplier on Friday. How much is that shipment worth in USD. Assume that you want to hedge against exchange rate risk, and go to the bank. The financial specialist at the bank gives you the official 3 month forward rate at 1.6175 USD per GBP. What does that imply for your payment to the bank in 3 months to get the 200000 GBP?
Suppose your company imports computer motherboards from Singapore. The exchange rate is $1.3595 per Singapore dollar. You have just placed an order for 39328 motherboards at a cost to you of S146 Singapore dollars each. You will pay for the shipment when it arrives in 90 days. You can sell the motherboards for $118 each. Calculate your profit if the exchange rates goes down by 12.23% over the next 90 days.
NOTE: Enter the number rounding to four DECIMALS. If your decimal answer is 0.034576

The current exchange rate is $1.125/€. Firm wants to sell euros in six months (to convert the inflow into dollars). Consider 3 possible spot prices in six months. 1. $1.195/€ 2. $1.100/€ 3. $1.025/€ What kind of option, put or call, is appropriate to hedge with? In each scenario, what is the total amount of the firm's NET receivable? NET receivable implies you should consider the receivable as well as the hedging costs of buying the option. The spot exchange rate is $1.00 = ¥100, and the six month forward rate is $1.00 = ¥110. The interest rate in Japan (on an investment of comparable risk) is 13 percent.
