Chapter 31.2, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To differentiate: Life cycles of fungi and humans in terms of haploidy and diploidy.

Concept introduction:

Many plants, animals, and fungi reproduce by sexual reproduction. Sexual life cycle involve an alternation between meiosis and fertilization. In meiosis, the diploid cell gives rise to a haploid cell and two haploid cells (gametes) fuse to form a diploid zygote (fertilization). There are three main categories of sexual life cycle: diploid-dominant, haploid-dominant, and alternation of generations.

Students have asked these similar questions
1. Describe the three modes that prokaryotes can 'obtain' new genes. Be sure to identify similarities and differences between the three modes. How does the concept of new gene introduction change the view that prokaryotes are asexual species? 2. Describe the conditions on Earth that is thought to have favored the evolution of seed plants? What, is a seed and how is it different from a spore?
MAKE CONNECTIONS Look at Figure 12.7 and imagine the twodaughter cells undergoing another round of mitosis, yielding four cells.Compare the number of chromosomes in each of those four cells, aftermitosis, with the number in each cell in Figure 13.8, after meiosis. Whatis it about the process of meiosis that accounts for this difference, eventhough meiosis also includes two cell divisions?
Chapter 8 - How do mitochondria and chloroplast work together in plants to sustain life? Chapter 17 - Explain why the 3:1 ratio is really just masking the 1:2:1 ratio in monohybrid crosses.
