Summary Introduction
To differentiate: Life cycles of
Concept introduction:
Many plants, animals, and fungi reproduce by sexual reproduction. Sexual life cycle involve an alternation between meiosis and fertilization. In meiosis, the diploid cell gives rise to a haploid cell and two haploid cells (gametes) fuse to form a diploid zygote (fertilization). There are three main categories of sexual life cycle: diploid-dominant, haploid-dominant, and alternation of generations.

Although ascospores are produced by mitotic division, none of the spores develop into fungi that are identical to either parental hyphae. What is the BEST explanation for this observation? A. The spores inherit half their genes from each parent. B. The spores inherit haploid nuclei from their parents. C. The spores inherit mutations as a result of meiosis. D. The ascospores inside the asci are produced by meiosis. Are ascospores haploid or diploid? Interspersed among the asci are sterilefilaments, the paraphyses. Deduce the function of paraphyses. The ascospores are released from the asci and undergo mitotic division upon germination. Are the individuals germinating from ascospores haploid or diploid?arrow_forward

Make sure to indicate whether each stage in the life cycle is haploid or diploid, and unicellular or multicellular. Also write the stage's name (e.g., zygote, gametophyte, spore, etc.) if it has one. You don't need to draw the stages - e.g., for a zygote you can just write "zygote, unicellular, 2N". Also make sure to indicate where exactly in the life cycle meiosis takes place.
