Chapter 32, Problem 10TYU
Summary Introduction

To describe:

A hypothesis concerning the relative rates of evaporative water loss by populations of Merriam’s kangaroo rats (Dipodomys merriami) that live in moist versus dry environments and the testing of the hypothesis using a humidity sensor to detect evaporative water loss by the kangaroo rats.

Concept introduction:

The variation in nephron structure occurs from species to species as the habitat changes. The kangaroo rats and other desert animal’s release hyperosmotic urine as their loop of Henle extend deep into the medulla. This long loop produces the concentrated urine so minimizes the water loss. Humidity sensor can used to test the evaporation loss by them.

Salt is notoriously dangerous to land snails; however, some populations of aquatic, freshwater snail have brackish (or a mix of salt and fresh water) water adaptations and live in different parts of a river system. Why is the brackish water adaptation necessary, and how can we determine whether the inherited adaptation is influenced by environmental factors.
Humans have constructed millions of dams worldwide to control flooding, generate power and provide water for irrigation. What are three serious negative effects of dams?    2. Discuss the distribution of water on Earth, for example where is most water found, is it saline or fresh, etc…
The puma or mountain lion, Puma concolor, ranges from the Canadian Yukon to the tip of South America. Body size of mammals also correlates well with latitude (Bergmann’s rule); the larger pumas live at high latitudes. Consequently, this variation in body size has been interpreted as the result of selection for efficient temperature regulation. Why are homeothermic animals often larger at high latitudes?
