Chapter 32, Problem S12.3BYB
Summary Introduction

To define:

The transgenic organism.

Introduction:

Transgenic organisms are the result of genetic modification by genetic engineering. In the transgenic organism, the genetic sequences are treated to express the gene of desire. The genome of these organisms does not occur naturally.

Explanation of Solution

The transgenic organisms are the organisms whose genetics have been altered or modified by the insertion of a modified gene or a new gene. The new genes inserted in the organism belong to another organism or a trait which is not expressed normally in the organism. The transgenic organism possesses foreign gene information that is known as transgene and the process is known as transfection.

The transgenic organisms are very important for medical, agricultural, and industrial purpose. It enables to express a trait in another organism, which enable the scientists to utilize them for various purposes. For example, the production of the recombinant insulin is done by manipulating the bacterial genome to produce insulin. In this case, a bacterium is taken, and a transgenic bacterium is created by inserting the genetic sequence responsible for insulin production. The transgenic bacteria divide in a small period of time and are capable of producing a large amount of insulin. This insulin can be used for administrating a diabetic patient and has fewer side effects as compared to the animal insulin.

Conclusion

The transgenic organisms are genetically modified organisms having some extra genes inserted by genetic engineering.
