Chapter 33.1, Problem 3MQ
Summary Introduction

Fungal infections or diseases caused by various fungal members on or inside the body of organisms are refereed as mycoses. Mycoses can be categorized as superficial (growth of fungus on upper layers of skin), subcutaneous (growth of fungus in deeper layers of skin), and systemic (growth of fungus inside the internal organs). Systemic infections can be further categorized into primary and secondary fungal infections.

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is caused by HIV (human immune deficiency virus). It attacks the T helper cells which are the immune cells that bring the information about the invasion of any organism in our body.

Distinguish between a primary and a secondary fungaldisease. Why do those suffering from HIV/AIDS often showsecondary fungal infections of major internal organs?
Why are systemic fungal pathogens called opportunistic?
Many fungal infections of humans are considered to be opportunistic, meaning that fungi that are normally free-living (usually in soil) can sometimes survive, and even thrive, on or inside the human body. From the fungal “point of view,” what unique challenges would be encountered when trying to survive on human skin? What about inside human lungs?
