You are working at your university swimming center. The athletic department decides that it would like to install a flag pole of height 10.0 m at the south end of one of the outdoor pools, which lies along a north–south axis. The pool is 3.00 m deep and the flag pole is to be installed 4.00 m from the south edge of the pool, midway along the length of the south edge. (a) Your supervisor knows of your expertise in physics and asks you to determine the distance of the shadow of the tip of the flag pole on the bottom of the pool from the south wall of the pool on a summer day when the Sun appears directly south and at an angle of 65.0° above the horizon. (b) Your supervisor also asks if there is any time during the year that the flag pole will not cast a shadow along the bottom of the pool when the Sun is due south. The highest the Sun reaches in the sky at this location is 68.5° at the summer solstice.

- A circular hole of radius 8.467 10-1 cm must be cut into the front panel of a display unit. The tolerance is 2.0 10-3 cm, which means the hole cannot differ by more than this quantity from the desired radius. If the actual hole is larger than the desired radius by the allowed tolerance, what is the difference between the actual area and the desired area of the hole?arrow_forwardBottles of perfume sometimes have thick glass (n= 1.5) walls which give the impression the volume is larger than it really is. Assume a cylindrical bottle with an inner radius of 1.0 cm and an outer radius of 2.0 cm. What percentage of the apparent volume is the real volume? а. 95% b. 60% с. 80% d. 64% е. 75%arrow_forwardOne barn, a unit used for cross sections in nuclear and particle physics, is equal to 10-28 square meters, about the cross-sectional area of a uranium nucleus.Assuming an atom is perfectly spherical and it has a diameter of 0.386 nm, determine its cross section in barns. Express your answer in scientific notation.arrow_forward

- Grains of fine California beach sand are approximately spheres with an average radius of 70 μ m and are made of silicon dioxide. A solid cube of silicon dioxide with a volume of 1.00 m3 has a mass of 2600 kg. What mass of small sand grains would have a total surface area (the total area of all individual spheres) equal to the surface area of a cube 1.00 m on an edge?arrow_forwardA rectangular glass container holds 32.0 mL of water. If one side is 3.60 cm and the other side is 5.0 cm, what must be the length of the third side in cm? Assume the sides of the container are extremely thin and therefore make a negligible contribution to the volume. Give your answer in the appropriate number of significant figures.arrow_forwardThe front yard outside your instructor's house has an approximate area of 130 m2. One night it snows so that the snow on the front yard has a uniform depth of 29.5 cm. What volume of snow is on the lawn, in cubic meters?arrow_forward
- Grains of fine California beach sand are approximately spheres with an average radius of 50 μm and are made of silicon dioxide, which has a density of 2.8 × 103 kg/m3. What mass of sand grains would have a total surface area (the total area of all the individual spheres) equal to the surface area of a cube 1.1 m on an edge?arrow_forwardCurrently, a Japanese brand manufactures standard blocks with a thickness of 1.0005 mm. Assume that an iron atom has a radius of 0.126 nm.
