Explanation of Solution

In most of the fungi, hyphae are the major source of vegetative growth. Group of hyphae is collectively referred as a mycelium. Hyphae are composed of cells surrounded by the tubular cell wall of chitin. The two major roles of hyphae in a fungus are as follows:

  1. 1. Hyphae help the fungi to seek new food resources. Hyphae can penetrate food resources, such as animal carcasses and rotting wooden logs.
  2. 2. Hyphae also functions in transporting mineral and nutrients from one part of the fungus to another.
Conclusion

Hyphae are long filamentous structures in a fungus. These are collectively referred as mycelium and help the fungus in transporting nutrients and searching new food resources.
