In most of the fungi, hyphae are the major source of vegetative growth. Group of hyphae is collectively referred as a mycelium. Hyphae are composed of cells surrounded by the tubular cell wall of chitin. The two major roles of hyphae in a fungus are as follows:
- 1. Hyphae help the fungi to seek new food
resources . Hyphae can penetrate food resources, such as animal carcasses and rotting wooden logs. - 2. Hyphae also functions in transporting mineral and nutrients from one part of the fungus to another.
