How is Styrofoam used to cast an engine block?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Identify how Styrofoam is used to cast an engine block.

Explanation of Solution

The engine block is the supporting structure of the engine. It is made of either gray cast iron or cast aluminum or die-cast aluminum alloy. During the manufacturing process, the liquid cast iron is poured into molds made from either sand or Styrofoam.

Aluminum blocks are used due to their non-magnetic and lightweight properties. In such blocks, Styrofoam is used as a core when casting the aluminum block. The Styrofoam vaporizes as soon as it comes in contact with the molten metal and leaves behind a cavity where the molten metal flows.
