Chapter 34, Problem 1TC
Summary Introduction

To describe:

The process of what happens to the molecule of carbon in a chemical sense which is present in an apple after it is eaten. Analyze the enzymes present, which break down the starch molecule into simpler carbohydrates and glucose, which is absorbed in the blood stream and is used for the production of ATP .

Introduction:

Apple is a fruit is also known as “Malus domestica”. It is a rich source of various vitamin K , copper, magnesium, and manganese.

Explanation of Solution

The steps involved in the digestion of apple include:

1) The digestion of starch in the apple by the action of salivary amylase enzyme.

2) The enzyme pancreatic amylase digests the starch in apple to produce glucose molecules.

3) Glucose penetrates the layer of the epithelial cell membrane and reaches blood vessels.

4) It then reaches various organs for producing energy in the metabolic reactions of the cell.

5) The energy is produced due to the synthesis of the molecule of ATP , inside the cell.

Conclusion

Apple contains starch, which is a polymer of glucose. This polymer is broken down by the action of salivary and pancreatic amylase enzyme in the mouth and pancreas. The molecule of glucose is transported into the blood stream, which reaches the various organs and cells, all this is is used for the production of energy inside the cell.
