Chapter 35, Problem 1A
Summary Introduction

Introduction: Plants are mainly multicellular, predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of kingdom Plantae. Plant growth is an outcome of cell, new cell enlargement and their differentiation into different tissue types. These growth processes are accompanied by an increase in the dry weight of growing parts and a permanent change in the size.

Fifteen years ago, your parents hung a swing from the lower branch of a large tree growing in your yard. When you go and sit in it today, you realize it is exactly the same height off the ground as it was when you first sat in it 15 years ago. The reason the swing is not higher off the ground as the tree has grown is that a. the tree trunk lacks secondary growth. b. the tree trunk is part of the primary growth system of the plant, but elongation is no longer occurring in that part of the tree. c. trees lack apical meristems and so do not get taller. d. you are hallucinating, because it is impossible for the swing not to have been raised off the ground as the tree grew.
Oscar and Lucinda meet in a tropical rain forest and fall in love, and he carves their initials into the bark of a tree.  They never do get together, though. Ten years later, still heartbroken, Oscar searches for the tree. Given what you know about primary and secondary growth, will he find the carved initials higher relative to ground level? If he  goes berserk and chops down the tree, what kinds of growth rings will he see?
Growers often wrap potted plants in plastic sleeves prior to shipping. If plants remain in these sleeves too long, their leaves curl and fall off. Imagine you are working at a garden center and have been asked to make a presentation to a local garden club.Unit 5 DQ Question: Explain the processes that may cause the leaves to drop and fall.
