Chapter 35, Problem 1WIO
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The tradeoffs in the two types of reproductive strategies and the forces that limit the stage of development at which the birth of humans take place.

Concept introduction:

Parturition is the process of giving birth to the new young ones. Parturition is of three types, namely oviparous, ovoviviparous and viviparous. In oviparous, the young ones are born in eggs which are hatched after the development of offspring. In viviparous, the live young ones are formed. In ovoviviparous, the young ones are produced in egg, but the eggs remain inside the female body. In viviparous organisms, some of the species produce offspring which can move freely immediately after birth.

Mate guarding is an evolved response to sperm competition. Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) females regularly mate with several males in the same estrous cycle, whereas gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) females almost never do, since they typically live in bands, each controlled by a single, powerful male. How large (as a proportion of body size) should the testes of chimpanzee males be relative to gorilla testes (Harcourt et al. 1981)? If the testes of men are more similar to those of chimpanzees, what would this tell us about the intensity of sperm competition during our evolutionary past? If, on the other hand, human testes resemble those of gorillas, what conclusion is justified? Please don't write from any online source.
In species with internal fertilization, the eggs often are attached to the outside of the female's body in brood chambers following copulation, before hatching into free-swimming offspring. What advantages might a brood chamber offer for the development of offspring?
Discuss the process and pathways of fertilzation in turtles. Also provide or show a diagram how does fertilization occur in female turtles
