Concept introduction: The primary growth of a plant directly arises from the apical meristem cells. In case of the plants that are herbaceous, the whole plant comprises of the primary growth. The nonwoody portions of the woody plants represent the primary growth. Shoots or roots are derived from the meristems, but they still differ in their growth patterns.
