Chapter 35, Problem 8TYK
Summary Introduction
To determine: The function of courtship behavior and the proximate cause of the behavior and also its ultimate cause.
Concept introduction:
The courtship behavior is a set of behavior in which the animal endeavors to lure the opposite sex and exhibit their wish to mate. In some species the male perform specialized movements to attract female while courtship behavior is less common in females due to requirement of high amount of energy which is to be utilized for gamete production and nourishment of young one after the fertilization.

Which of the following questions is most closely associated with anultimate cause of a behavior?a. How does a squid alter its color to blend in with its environment?b. How does a hummingbird’s body shape influence its ability tohover?c. How do alarm calls affect prairie dog fitness?d. Which cues do monarch butterflies use during migration?
Territoriality behaviors actually decrease competition between members of the same species. Explain why this is the case, and therefore how territoriality is favored by natural selection.
Because resources are limited, natural selection will favor organisms that acquire the most food and resources while expending the least energy, an idea called the optimal foraging theory. This theory is paired with another that more specifically explains patch movement and foraging behavior, which is named the marginal value theorem.
