CONCEPTUAL EXAMPLE 35–14
Three Polaroids. We saw in Fig. 35–36 that when unpolarized light falls on two crossed Polaroids (axes at 90°), no light passes through. What happens if a third Polaroid, with axis at 45° to each of the other two, is placed between them (Fig. 35–38a)?
EXERCISE E How much light would pass through if the 45° polarizer in Example 35–14 was placed not between the other two polarizers but (a) before the vertical (first) polarizer, or (b) after the horizontal polarizer?

- Show that if you have three polarizing filters, with the second at an angle of 45.0to the first and at third at an angle of 90.0to the first, the intensity of light passed by the first will be reduced to 25.0% of its value. (This is in contrast to having only the first and third, which reduces the intensity to zero, so that placing the second between them increases the intensity of the transmitted light.)arrow_forwardProve that if I is the intensity of light transmitted by two polarizing filters with axes at an angle and I’ is the intensity when the axes are at an angle 90.0, then I+I=I0, the original intensity. (Hint: Use the trigonometric identities cos 90.0=sinand cos2sin2=1 .)arrow_forwardFour polarizers are placed in succession with their axesvertical, at 30.0° to the vertical, at 60.0° to the vertical, andat 90.0° to the vertical. (a) Calculate what fraction of theincident unpolarized light is transmitted by the fourpolarizers. (b) Can the transmitted light be decreased byremoving one of the polarizers? If so, which one? (c) Canthe transmitted light intensity be extinguished by removingpolarizers? If so, which one(s)?arrow_forward
- A system of three polarizing sheets is placed in the path of initially unpolarized light. The polarizing direction of the first sheet, P1, is parallel to the y-axis, that of the second sheet, P2, is 60o counterclockwise from the y-axis, and that of the third sheet, P3, is parallel to the x-axis. Determine the fraction of the initial intensity Io of the light emerges from the system, i.e. ratio I0/I3. By how much does the second filter reduce the intensity of the light coming through the first?arrow_forwardFive polarizers are stacked, with the polarizing axis of the second, third, fourth and fifth polarizers at angles ofn10,20,30, and 40 degrees relative to that of the first. The first polarizers axis is vertical. I) if unpolarized light of intensith Io is incident on the first polarizer, find the intensity in terms of Io of light emergind from the last 5th polarizer. II) if the second polarizer is removed, but the others are left uncharged, what is the final intensity of the light emerging from the last polarizer in the stack?arrow_forward
- Light of intensity Io is polarized vertically and is incident on an analyzer rotated at an angle θ from the vertical. Find the angle θ if the transmitted light has intensity of I = Io/2.a. 0b. π/4c. π/2d. Cannot be determinedarrow_forwardTwo polarizers are oriented at 65º to one another. As a result, unpolarized light falls on them. What fraction of the light intensity is transmitted?arrow_forward
