Question
Chapter 35.2, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction
To explain: Whether it is a good idea to leave the smaller carrots for a second year in the field.
Concept introduction:
Carrots belong to herb family. They are biennial plants. They grow as a large taproot with a bunch of leaves. Their large pointed taproot contains stored food in the form of carbohydrates. They are a rich source of beta carotene.
The food reserves of taproot are usually used for flowering in the next season. The carrots that are left in the field turn bitter and their nutritional quality also deteriorates with time.

B. LEAF ADAPTATION
The main function of the leaf is in the processes of photosynthesis and
transpiration. Apart from these functions, leaf is sometimes adapted to
perform other functions.
Examples of leaf adaptations are for:
a)
Support, which could be seen by the presence of tendrils
b)
Catching insects, by having cup-liked shape of hairs sensitive to
touch
c)
Reproduction, by having meristematic cells able to produce new
shoots that will go on to become new individual plants
d)
Food and water storage, especially found in plants living in dry areas
where water is scarce (for example succulent plants, having leaf storing
food and water)
e)
Floatation, for plants living on the water surface, their leaves in
general will have air openings on tissues (used for floating) usually
found on leaf petiole
f)
Protection, by having leaves completely or partially modified as thorns

- Tobacco plants invest a lot of resources into the production of secondary compounds know as alkaloids (e.g., nicotine) that we believe act as defenses against herbivores. The researchers did an experiment where they added a hormone that reduces the production of alkaloids. In graph (a), the data show that the hormone reduced the proportion of alkaloids as a function of leaf mass relative to controls- so the hormone worked. They also measured the lifetime seed production of the plants in both treatments without any herbivores present (b). They had the following results.
