Concept explainers
To explain: “Tepals” on the basis of ABC hypothesis.
Concept introduction: In plants, transition from vegetative to reproductive phase is marked by production of flowers. Flowering is induced by day length and certain chemicals called hormones. “Floral meristem identity genes” play an important role in flowering.
The development of floral pattern is regulated by various organ identity genes. These genes belong to the MADS-box family. These genes encode transcription factors that regulate the expression of other genes and thereby produce a peculiar floral pattern. The floral pattern consists of four whorls that appears as concentric circles when viewed from the top.

- Discuss Concepts Compare the size, anatomical complexity, and degree of independence of a Douglas fir female gametophyte and a dogwood female gametophyte. Which one is the most protected from the external environment? Which trend(s) in plant evolution does your work on this question bring to mind?arrow_forward. MAKE CONNECTIONS What type of feedback processis exemplified by the production of ethylene during fruitripening? Explain. If a seed could not enter dormancy, howmight that affect the embryo’s transport or survival?arrow_forwardDiscuss Concepts Baobab trees (Adansonia spp.) store water in their trunks (stems) and, although the trees have leaves, considerable photosynthesis also occurs in the trunks. Cacti too have water-storing, photosynthetic stems. In terms of evolutionary adaptation, what does this information suggest about cacti and baobabs?arrow_forward

If tomato leafcells have a similar enzyme, would applying Viagra tothese cells cause a normal de-etiolation of aurea mutanttomato leaves?arrow_forwardWhat If? After growing carrots for one season, agardener decides that the carrots are too small. Sincecarrots are biennials, the gardener leaves the crop in theground for a second year, thinking the carrot roots willgrow larger. Is this a good idea? - Apply Evolutionary Thinking A variety of structural features of land plants reflect the conflicting demands for conserving water and taking in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Identify at least four fundamental structural adaptations that help resolve this dilemma and explain how each one contributes to a land plants survival.arrow_forwardIn some species, sepals look like petals, and both are collectively called “tepals.” Suggest an extension to the ABC hypothesis that could account for tepals.arrow_forwardWHAT IF?
