Summary Introduction

To determine: The process of infectious disease.

Introduction. A reservoir can be defined as the natural environmental habitat where a pathogen is typically found. This site serves as the place from where the pathogen can cause direct infection. In such cases, the reservoir acts as the source of the disease. These reservoirs can be living or non-living, they can also be present in dead and decaying.

Explanation of Solution

Pathogen transmission and infection take place through a series of steps. The steps begin from the entry of the infectious organsim inside the host and then release into the environment. The steps by which the viral infection is established are as follows:

  • Entry of the pathogen into the host:. The pathogen can enter from the surrounding, contaminated material (fomites) or an infected host.
  • Attachment to the host cell: The structures like flagella, cilia, glycocalyx present on the pathogens help them to attach to the surface of the host cell.
  • Multiplication of pathogens and release in the host cell: The infectious particle multiplies inside the host cell, and the progeny are released into the body to spread the infection.
  • The release of the infectious particles into the surrounding: The pathogens after causing infection leaves the host body and returns to the environment to complete its life cycle.
