Figure 37-27 is a graph of intensity versus wavelength for light reaching Earth from galaxy NGC 7319, which is about 3 × 108 light-years away. The most intense light is emitted by the oxygen in NGC 7319. In a laboratory that emission is at wavelength λ = 513 nm, but in the light from NGC 7319 it has been shifted to 525 nm due to the Doppler effect (all the emissions from NGC 7319 have been shifted). (a) What is the radial speed of NGC 7319 relative to Earth? (b) Is the relative motion toward or away from our planet?

- Problem-1: An asteroid is hurtling toward earth at 150,000“. The temperature of the asteroid is about 100 K, meaning that its peak emission is 2 = 29 µm. The speed of light is c = 3E[8]. a) What is the wavelength of light that we receive from the asteroid? (Answer: 2.89855E[-05] m)arrow_forwardIn the LHC, protons are accelerated to a total energy of 7.80 TeV. The mass of proton is 1.673 × 10−27 kg and Planck’s constant is 6.626 × 10−34 J·s. In the reference frame of the protons, how long does it take the protons to go around the tunnel once? I know the answer is 10.8ns. The solutions posted on here, do not come within 1% of that answer so I cannot trust that the steps are correct. Please give step by step instructions on how to arrive at 10.8 nsarrow_forwardA pulsar is a rapidly spinning remnant of a supernova. It rotates on its axis, sweeping hydrogen along with it so that hydrogen on one side moves toward us as fast as 50.0 km/s, while that on the other side moves away as fast as 50.0 km/s. This means that the EM radiation we receive will be Dopplershifted over a range of ±50.0 km/s . What range of wavelengths will we observe for the 91.20-nm line in the Lyman series of hydrogen? (Such line broadening is observed and actually provides part of the evidence for rapid rotation.)arrow_forward
- The elliptical galaxy NGC 4889 is the largest galaxy in the Coma Cluster (shown in the image below taken by the Hubble Space Telescope). After analysing the spectrum of NGC 4889, an astronomer identifies a spectral line as being CaII (singly ionised Calcium) with a measured wavelength of 401.8 nm. The true, rest wavelength of this spectral line, measured in a lab, is 393.3 nm. What would be this galaxy’s recessional velocity, in km/s?arrow_forwardA) What is the approximate wavelength emitted from helium represented by the bright yellow emission line below? What is it's frequency in HZ and energy in eV? (1 eV= 1.6 x 10-19 joules). B) If the excited helium electron that emits a yellow photon in this line starts with a potential energy of 8 eV, what is the potential energy of the electron afterwards? Assume that the emission of a yellow photon is allowed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Also don't worry about the other electron.arrow_forwardA galaxy G is moving away radially with speed with respect to an observer O. The relation between X, the wavelength of light emitted at G, and λo, the wavelength observed at O, is 入。 λ = λe λε 1+B 1- B' = where ẞ v/c (c is the speed of light). For ẞ < 1 find a power series expansion of the above formula up to and including terms of order ẞ³.arrow_forward
- The light from the sun is found to have a maximum intensity near the wavelength of 470 nm. Assuming the surface of the sun as a black body, the temperature of the sun is ...... [Wien's constant, b = 2.898 x 10³ mK] (a) 5800 K (b) 6050 K (c) 6166 K (d) 6500 Karrow_forwardThe photons that make up the cosmic microwave background were emitted about 380,000 years after the Big Bang. Today, 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang, the wavelengths of these photons have been stretched by a factor of about 1100 since they were emitted because lengths in the expanding universe have increased by that same factor of about 1100. Consider a cubical region of empty space in today's universe 1.00 m on a side, with a volume of 1.00 m³. What was the length so of each side and the volume V of this same cubical region 380,000 years after the Big Bang? So = Vo = Enter numeric value Today the average density of ordinary matter in the universe is about 2.4 × 10-27 kg/m³. What was the average density po of ordinary matter at the time that the photons in the cosmic microwave background radiation were emitted? Po = m m³ kg/m³arrow_forwardIf the electrons gain this energy by collision between hydrogen atoms in a high temperature gas, find the minimum temperature of the heated hydrogen gas. The thermal energy of the heated atoms is given by 3 kB T 2, where the Boltzmann constant is 1.38 × 10-23 J/K. Answer in units of K.arrow_forward
- Scientists observe a distant galaxy with a spectrometer. They find that the wavelength of the Lymann alpha Hydrogen line in the stars spectrum has shifted from its laboratory value of 121.6 nm to three times that value, 364.8 nm. According to the doppler effect, how fast is the galaxy receeding from us? (Find v/c of the galaxy relative to us).arrow_forwardAn electron and a positron are moving toward each other and each has speed 0.500c in the lab frame. (a) What is the kinetic energy of each particle? (b) The e+ and e- meet head-on and annihilate. What is the energy of each photon that is produced? (c) What is the wavelength of each photon? How does the wavelength compare to the photon wavelength when the initial kinetic energy of the e+ and e- is negligibly small.arrow_forwardNear the center of our galaxy, hydrogen gas is moving directly away from us in its orbit about a black hole. We receive electromagnetic radiation of wavelength 1888 nm and know that it was 1875 nm when emitted by the hydrogen gas. Randomized Variablesλ = 1888 nm What is the ratio of the speed of the gas to the speed of light?arrow_forward
