Chapter 3.7, Problem 63E
If we allow physician-assisted suicide for those who are terminally ill and request it, it won’t be long before society begins pressuring the old and infirm to get out of the way and make room for the young. Before long the government will be deciding who should live and who should die.

In February 2021, the Chicago Tribune reported:“The overdose epidemic that has ravaged Chicago has not spared the nearby suburbs, some of which have death rates comparable to anything seen in the city, according to a report released this week by the Cook County Department of Public Health. ZIP codes in the towns of Worth, Broadview, Maywood, and Forest Park, areas that “have substantially lower median household incomes and higher poverty rates,” have been especially hard-hit, the report said.”In the article, they claimed that lower incomes were associated with higher overdose death rates and that overdose death rates are increasing over time. The data you have been analyzing wasn’t focused on Chicago, obviously. But do your results support the general gist of the statistical argument being made in this Tribune excerpt? Please address:• Do overdose death rates appear to be associated with per capita income (use scatterplot)?• Do overdose death rates appear to be increasing over time…
Some commercial airlines recirculate about half the air in the cabin during flights as a way to improve fuel efficiency. Other airlines make a policy of NOT recirculating the air and instead, have fresh air from the atmosphere constantly being inserted into the cabin with the “old” air being pumped out of the plane.
A total of 1100 passengers flying from San Francisco to Denver were used for an experiment. After their flight, they were each given a list of symptoms associated with the common cold. They were asked to report if they experienced cold symptoms within 24 hours of the flight landing.
Of the 517 passengers who flew on planes that recirculate the air, 108 reported post-flight cold symptoms. Of the 583 passengers who flew on airlines that do not use recirculation in the cabin, 110 reported symptoms.
Suppose now that we want to use the recirculation of air data to explore “Goal #2”, which is to resolve a hypothesis test about .
a) If we want to resolve this hypothesis…
Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, has the lowest adult literacy rate in the world (25.3%). Over the past 15 years, the government has focused heavily on improving access to education across the country. Between 2008 and 2015, the primary school completion rate rose from 40% to 60%, and the high school completion rate doubled over the same period from 15% to 30%. Despite these encouraging statistics, children in rural areas, especially girls, continue to have limited access to quality education.
You put together a survey to collect information on the following variables and you are ready to analyze:
Gender
Age at last birthday
Distance from school
Level of education (Primary, Secondary, Post-Secondary)
Discuss what measure of central tendency is the most appropriate for each variable making sure to explain why.

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardTed Glickman, the administrator at D.C. General Hospital emergency room faces the problem of providing treatment for patients who arrive at different rates during the day. There are 4 doctors available to treat patients when needed. If not needed, they can be assigned other responsibilities (such as doing lab tests, reports, X-ray diagnoses) or else rescheduled to work at other hours. It is important to provide quick and responsive treatment, and Ted feels that, on the average, patients should not have to sit in the waiting area for more than 5 minutes before being seen by a doctor. Patients are treated on a first-come, first-served basis and see the first available doctor after waiting in the queue. The arrival pattern for a typical day is as follows: Time Arrival Rate 9 A.M.−3 P.M. 8 patients/hour 3 P.M.−8 P.M. 3 patients/hour 8 P.M.−midnight 13 patients/hour Arrivals follow a Poisson distribution, and treatment times, 12…arrow_forwardYou are concerned that nausea may be a side effect of Tamiflu, but you cannot just give Tamiflu to patients with the flu and say that nausea is a side effect if people become nauseous. However, past research indicates that about 30% of people who get the flu experience nausea, and you believe that the percentage of those who experience nausea while having the flu and taking Tamiflu will be greater than 30%, which would indigate that nausea is a side effect of Tamiflu. If you are going to test this claim at the 0.05 significance level, what would be your null and alternative hypotheses? - Like any seeds, watermelon seeds lose their viability over time. If they've been left sitting for years, it's possible that only a small proportion of the seeds may sprout when planted. If they have been stored in a cool, dark, dry location, they have a better chance of sprouting. Drake has a large quantity of old watermelon seeds he's been saving, and now wants to know how many of them may still be able to sprout. He randomly selects 50 seeds from the set, places them between damp paper towels, and puts them in a plastic baggie in a warm spot on the counter. He finds that 27 out of the 50 seeds do sprout. Does this provide good evidence that over half of all of the seeds will sprout? (a) What proportion of Drake's tested seeds actually sprouted? p = (b) State the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses. р ? 0.5 Ho: на: р ? 0.5 (c) What is the value of z, the test statistic, for this test? The restaurant, which is owned and operated by Karen Payne, has just completed its third year of operation. During this time, Karen sought to establish a reputation for the restaurant as a high-quality dining establishment that specializes in fresh seafood. The efforts made by Karen and her staff have proved successful, and her restaurant has become one of the best and fastest-growing restaurants on the island. Karen has just concluded that to plan better for the growth of the restaurant in the future, it is necessary to develop a system that will enable her to forecast food and beverage sales by the month for up to 1 year in advance. Karen has the following data available on the total food and beverage sales that were realized during the previous 3 years of operation. However, cattle ranchers in this area have made a determined effort to exterminate wolves. From 1918 to the present, approximately 65% of wolves in the region are male, and 35% are female. Biologists suspect that male wolves are more likely than females to return to an area where the population has been greatly reduced. (Round your answers to three decimal places.) (a) Before 1918, in a random sample of 11 wolves spotted in the region, what is the probability that 8 or more were male? What is the probability that 8 or more were female? What is the probability that fewer than 5 were female?(b) For the period from 1918 to the present, in a random sample of 11 wolves spotted in the region, what is the probability that 8 or more were male? What is the probability that 8 or more were female? What is the probability that fewer than 5 were female?arrow_forwardOver doses from opioids have captured the national spotlight. Rightly so - they kill nearly 30,000 Americas a year and cause more than 1 million hospitalizations. However, the misuse of over-the-counter pain medications (e.g. Tylenol, Advil, Aleve) can cause stomach bleeding, ulcers, liver disease and, in some cases, death. Approximately 80% of Americans use these medications to relieve headaches, backaches, sore muscles, and reduce fever but they are unaware of the dangers if the drugs are not used correctly. A random sample (n=101) of adults were given a questionnaire to ask the question "How often do you use pain medication in one day?".
