Chapter 37, Problem 9WIO
Summary Introduction

To enlist:

Two species; one of which is endangered and the other is growing out of control. Also, to compare their birth and death rates and other factors that leads to such differences.

Concept introduction:

Endangered species is the one that is on the verge of extinction. One such endangered species is Tigers. There are only about 3200 tigers left in the world. Now, tigers only occupy 7% of their original range.

On the other hand, some species are growing out of control. One such species is Brown tree snake. These species are mainly found in the United States and were accidently introduced in the 1950s . Since then, this species is growing out of control and decimating birds in the region.

For each organism, create a survivorship curve by plotting the given information in a line graph. Title each graph "Survivorship Curve for [name of organism]." The y-axis should be labeled "Survivorship" and contain low, medium, and high indicators. The x-axis should be labeled "Life Span" and contain young, middle-aged, and old indicators. Andean condors reproduce slowly. Females lay one or two eggs every other year. The offspring that hatch are well-protected and cared for, and many reach sexual maturity at five to six years. Although their numbers are being threatened by human impacts, they are naturally long-lived, surviving for seventy to seventy-five years.
https://media.hhmi.org/biointeractive/click/lionfish-invasion/introduction.html This section starts explaining how scientists use the population survey data that are collected to model how the lionfish population changes over time. These models enable scientists to make predictions about population changes, which is an important element of developing plans for managing the lionfish population You'll be using the discrete-time logistic model that is described on this page in future parts of the case study, so make sure to carefully read through the explanation of this mathematical model. Even if you don't have a strong math background, this case study walks through the equation step by step.   6)Which of the following are constant terms in the discrete-time logistic model? choose all that apply a)Nt b)ΔN c)t d)K e)Δt f)rmax,d g)None of these
What do restocking programs for wild animals involve?   Pick one of the following answers:   Releasing individuals into an existing population to increase the size of the population and the diversity of its gene pool   Releasing wild-collected individuals into a new site   Releasing captive-bred individuals into a new site   Releasing captive-bred or wild-collected individuals into an ecologically suitable site within their historical ranges where the species no longer occurs
