The orientation of polarizing filters.
Answer to Problem 1OQ
Option (a) The polarizers should absorb light with its electric field horizontal.
Explanation of Solution
The light glare during the time of driving or boating has horizontal polarization. Reflected light will have polarization same as the reflecting surface.
When unpolarized light is incident on a shiny horizontal surface, there will be reflection which is nothing but re-emission of light energy by the atoms. The atoms on the surface oscillate about the mean position when the light is incident on the surface.
Conclusion:
The corresponding emission of light from oscillating atoms has polarization along the plane of vibration. Hence, the reflected light will be horizontally polarized. Therefore, option (a) is correct.

- What is the physical significance of the Poynting vector?arrow_forwardThe Poynting vector describes a flow of energy whenever electric and magnetic fields are present. Consider a long cylindrical wire of radius r with a current I in the wire, with resistance R and voltage V. From the expressions for the electric field along the wire and the magnetic field around the wire, obtain the magnitude and direction of the Poynting vector at the surface. Show that it accounts for an energy flow into the wire from the fields around it that accounts for the Ohmic heating of the wire.arrow_forwardIf the electric field of an electromagnetic wave is oscillating along the z-axis and the magnetic field is oscillating along the x-axis, in what possible direction is the wave traveling?arrow_forward

- If a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is propagating out of the plane of screen and the magnetic field is instantaneously directed towards the right of the screen, what is the instantaneous direction of the electric field? a) to the left b) upwards c) downwards d) to the right e) none of the other responses are correctarrow_forwardFrom a local TV station transmitter, a sinusoidal, plane electromagnetic wave is normally incident on an open window that has an area of 0.510m2. The wave travels to the right in the positive x-direction at the speed of light c and the window is thus perpendicular to the x-axis. See the schematic. Suppose the three electric field components have wave functions: EX = 0 EY = Emsin(kx-ωt) EZ = 0 See the axes below. At the moment shown the electric field - indicated by the vertically upward arrow - points in the positive y direction. Assume the field magnitude Em = 0.01000 V/m. The Erms (root mean square) of the electric field would thus be Erms = 0.00707 V/m. (a) At the moment shown above, in what direction does the magnetic field point? Indicate this direction by drawing a symbol near the z-axis. (b) Compute the numerical value of amplitude Bm of the magnetic field component pointing in the direction you found.arrow_forward
