Chapter 38, Problem 9TYU
Summary Introduction

To determine: How self-incompatible species are in severe population bottleneck compared to self-fertile species.

Concept introduction: Self-incompatibility is a genetic mechanism in angiosperms, which prevent self-fertilization from inbreeding and promote the generation of new genotypes in plants, and thus encouraging the outcrossing process. This is the major reason for the success of angiosperms on the earth. Selection may favor partial or complete loss of these species, because they develop zero to very low seeds. The females are more likely to receive an inadequate amount of pollen in self-incompatible conditions.

Intraspecific competition is a competition between members of the same species and is commonly observed in crop plants. Table 6.2 shows the results of a greenhouse experiment which examined the effects of density on the germination and growth of barley. Plants were grown for two weeks in 10- cm diameter pots kept in identical environmental conditions and watered regularly. At the end of the experiment the plants were cropped by cutting the stems at the soil surface. In the given context, can you explain thoroughly the meaning of plant density that this passage is talking about?
Many plants can be produced as genetically identical clones by asexual reproduction. Although advantageous in some ways, such genetically plants can be a disadvantage when ________. -a disease is present in the environment -the environment is stable -mates are in short supply -pollinators are absent
Which of the following is the best example of coevolution?O A. Antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria proliferate when antibiotics kill good bacteria and select for any cells resistant to that antibiotic.O B. Birds and bats both have wings, but these structures developed independently.O C. Sharks and dolphins look very similar, but sharks are a type of fish, and dolphins are a type of mammal.O D. Some plants that require pollination have developed ways to attract pollinators, such as brightly colored and fragrant flowers; pollinators have developed specializedstructures to obtain pollen and nectar from the plants.
