Question
Chapter 39, Problem 11WIO
Summary Introduction
To determine:
How the human created biome like cities, rangeland, and tree farms are similar and different from the natural biomes.
Concept introduction:
The naturally occurring species of flora and fauna that occupy particular, specific area is called as biome. It is the characteristics of natural vegetation associated with climatic condition. There are nine terrestrial biomes present on Earth: tropical rainforest, savanna, desert, chaparral, temperate grassland, temperate decidious forest, temperate evergreen forest, taiga and tundra.

Which among the following biomes are suited for organisms capable of surviving with limited water supply?
Savanna
Tundra
Dessert
Rainforest
Choose a specific biome between the marine, freshwater, or any terrestrial biome. Discuss the
types of plants and animals in that biome. Describe the climate and any non-living components
(such as water, rocks, soil) of the biome. Where can the biome be found?
What biogeochemical cycles occur in this biome? Are there any reservoirs for the nutrients?
Where can the nutrients be found and what processes do they go through as they transition to a
different reservoir? Describe at least two of the biogeochemical cycles and the nutrients and minerals that move through them in your chosen biome.
What is the value of biome diversification in an ecosystem?
What features of a biome can contribute to the success of an ecosystem or the organisms that use it as a habitat?
Can anthropogenic influence play a positive role in biome diversification or can human influence only negatively impact biome diversity?

Naturally, broadleaf trees will replace longleaf pine trees, changing the forest from coniferous to deciduous. However, fire removes the broadleaf species, maintaining the coniferous forest. Before agriculture, the southeastern United States was dominated by longleaf pine, but now broadleaf trees are found where the great coniferous forests once grew. From this change in forest species, what do you know has happened to the frequency of fire in the southeastern United States? There are more forest fires in the southern United States now then there were in the past. There are fewer forest fires in the southern United States now then there were in the past.arrow_forward
