The rain shadow is a dry area present present on the side of the mountain. In this area, the precipitation rate is very low due to the topographic barrier like mountains. There is a direct relation between the moisture holding capacity and altitude. When air rises, it cools down and so its moisture holding capacity decreases and hence it precipitates in the form of rain. On the other side when air descends it warms up and moisture from its surroundings that is from the soil, plants.
