To determine:
Whether parents should make decisions for their young children to have vaccinations or the use of cochlear implants should wait until they are old enough to decide for themselves.
Introduction:
Inner ear causes the formation of a spiral-shaped structure termed as the cochlea. The cochlea is a U-shaped tube lining the central portion of the ear. A cochlea has about 3,500 hair cells that are involved in sound detection and axon stimulation in the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are much unsophisticated than functional biological cochlea.
As given in the study, Samantha was a 16-year-old girl who has decided to receive an implant. However, there are many young children who had cochlear implants in their childhoods, when they were unable to understand their conditions and make a decision. A cochlear implant has a set of 16 to 22 platinum electrodes threaded from the cochlea. Such electrodes are present in an arrangement from the start of the cochlea to its tip. The sound-receiving unit present on the outside of the head has a small microphone and a microprocessor. They create the sound and enhance the sound, respectively.
