Chapter 4, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason for the non-functioning of a protein due to a mutation in one of the amino acid present in it.

Concept introduction:

The unpredictable change in the structure or amount of DNA of an organism is known as mutation. The mutation that occurs in the somatic cells does not pass from one generation to the next. Those mutations that occur in the formation of gametes will be inherited by the offspring.

Explanation of Solution

The primary structure of protein is made up of a sequence of chain of amino acids. The folding of the amino acid chain in a specific conformation is a fundamental process for the formation of protein. Proteins are the molecules in the body that carry out important functions. Before proteins can carry out their function, they must first assemble themselves, or go through the process of folding.

Mutation in a single amino acid present on the primary structure of the protein will lead to its malfunctioning. The folding of the proteins to become functional only occurs by the specific bonding between the amino acids. Due to the mutation in the amino acid, the folding of the protein will be affected that leads to the formation of a non-functional protein.

Conclusion

Proteins are the amino acid chains that acquire their biological properties by folding into a unique 3D structure.
