Concept explainers
If a car stops suddenly, you feel “thrown forward.” We’d like to understand what happens to the passengers as a car stops. Imagine yourself sitting on a very slippery bench inside a car. This bench has no friction, no seat back, and there’s nothing for you to hold on to.
a. Draw a picture and identify all of the forces acting on you as the car travels in a straight line at a perfectly steady speed on level ground.
b. Draw your free-body diagram. Is there a net force on you? If so, in which direction?
c. Repeat parts a and b with the car slowing down.
d. Describe what happens to you as the car slows down.
e. Use Newton’s laws to explain why you seem to be “thrown forward” as the car stops. Is there really a force pushing you forward?

- A car of mass 875 kg is traveling 30.0 m/s when the driver applies the brakes, which lock the wheels. The car skids for 5.60 s in the positive x-direction before coming to rest. (a) What is the cars acceleration? (b) What magnitude force acted on the car during this time? (c) How far did the car travel?arrow_forwardMass and Weight The weight of an astronaut plus his space suit on the Moon is only 250 N. (a) How much does the suited astronaut weigh on Earth? (b) What is the mass on the Moon? On Earth?arrow_forwardA brave but inadequate rugby player is being pushed backward by an opposing player who is exerting a force of 800 N on him. The mass of the losing player plus equipment is 90.0 kg, and he is accelerating at 1.20 m/s2 backward. (a) What is the force of friction between the losing player's feet and the grass? (b) What force does the winning player exert on the ground to move forward if his mass plus equipment is 110 kg? (c) Draw a sketch of the situation showing the system of interest used to solve each part. For this situation, draw a free-body diagram and write the net force equation.arrow_forward

(a) What Is the mass of the backpack? (b) What does the scale read if the elevator moves upward while speeding up at a rate 3.8m/s2 ? (c) What does the scale read if the elevator moves upward at constant velocity? (d) If the elevator had no brakes and the cable supporting it were to break loose so that the elevator could fall freely, what would the spring scale read?arrow_forward(a) A car with a mass of 850 kg is moving to the right with a constant speed of 1.44 m/s.
