Concept explainers
A city planner is working on the redesign of a hilly portion of a city. An important consideration is how steep the roads can be so that even low-powered cars can get up the hills without slowing down. A particular small car. with a mass of 920 kg. can accelerate on a level road from rest to 21 m/s (75 km/h) in 12.5 s. Using these data, calculate the maximum steepness of a hill.

- A really old 1500kg car without ABS brakes is traveling on a flat, horizontal road ay 75mph when the rivers suddenly slams on the brakes. The coefficient of sliding friction between the car tires and the road is 0.35. What distance does the car travel before coming to a complete stop!arrow_forwardWalking in Waikiki, a tourist steps out onto Kuhio Dr while texting. Unbeknownst to the sunburned visitor, the street has been closed for the filming of a car chase scene for Hawaii 5-0. Slamming on the breaks, the stunt driver is thrown against his seatbelt, stopping in 90m. If the driver and the car weigh a total of 544kg and were traveling at 18 m/s, what force does the 90kg driver feel? - You are a member of an alpine rescue team and must get a box of supplies, with mass 2.20 kg , up an incline of constant slope angle 30.0 so that it reaches a stranded skier who is a vertical distance 3.10 m above the bottom of the incline. There is some friction present; the kinetic coefficient of friction is 6.00×10−2. Since you can't walk up the incline, you give the box a push that gives it an initial velocity; then the box slides up the incline, slowing down under the forces of friction and gravity. Take acceleration due to gravity to be 9.81 m/s2 . Use the work-energy theorem to calculate the minimum speed v that you must give the box at the bottom of the incline so that it will reach the skier. Express your answer numerically, in meters per second.arrow_forwardBank robbers have pushed a 1000 kg safe to a second-story floor-to-ceiling window. They plan to break the window, then lower the safe 3.0 m to their truck. Not being too clever, they stack up 500 kg of furniture, tie a rope between the safe and the furniture, and place the rope over a pulley. Then they push the safe out the window. The problem was that the acceleration was too large and the safe slammed on the truck withlarge velocity (6.1 m/s), breaking through the truck floor. Now the robbers decide they learned their lesson. They plan to redo this action and decide that thesafe should not hit the (new) truck with velocity greater than 1.5 m/s.What is the maximum acceleration that the safe can have in order to limit the impact velocity to1.5 m/s? What is the minimum coefficient of friction that they need to have this work?arrow_forwardBank robbers have pushed a 1000 kg safe to a second-story floor-to-ceiling window.
