Concept explainers
An outfielder throws a baseball to his catcher in an attempt to throw out a runner at home plate. The ball bounces once before reaching the catcher. Assume the angle at which the bounced ball leaves the ground is the same as the angle at which the outfielder threw it as shown in Figure P4.46, but that the ball’s speed after the bounce is one-half of what it was before the bounce. (a) Assume the ball is always thrown with the same initial speed and ignore air resistance. At what angle θ should the fielder throw the ball to make it go the same distance D with one bounce (blue path) as a ball thrown upward at 45.0° with no bounce (green path)? (b) Determine the ratio of the time interval for the one-bounce throw to the flight time for the no-bounce throw.

- A person throws a ball with speed 102 m/s at a 45° angle. How many seconds faster would the ball arrive if the person threw the ball at the same speed and the same distance but made the trip in two identical bumps. Assume that there is no loss of speed at the bounce. Hint: Use R = v2/g * sin(2θ) and t=2*vy(sinθ)/g.arrow_forwardTwo identical objects with the same initial speed collide and stick together. If the composite object moves with half the initial speed of either object, what was the angle between the initial velocities? Ann throws the baseball straight upwards from the ground with an initial velocity of V0.coin = 5 [m/s] j. At the exact moment that the baseball was released, Teller throws the coin with an initial velocity of vo,ball = 10 [m/s] î + 5 [m/s] j from the ground. Which of the following is true about the two objects? A. The baseball will reach the ground first. B. The coin will reach a greater height. C. Both objects will reach the ground at the same time. D. The baseball will reach the ground last.arrow_forward
- You stand still and throw a ball straight upwards with an initial speed of 7.50 m/s. You then repeat this experiment while on a moving sidewalk that is moving horizontally with a speed of 0.500 m/s. How high does the ball go?arrow_forwardVhas Thed is standing on a bridge. He is at a height 83.6 m above the water below. Suddenly he received a call from his cell phone that makes him mad and throws his phone horizontally off the bridge with a speed of 25.7 m/s. How far does the cell phone travel horizontally before hitting the water? For two seconds, the truck uniformly accelerated until it reached a velocity of 4 m/s which it then maintained. With hatred, Georgia throws the last piece of balut with a velocity of 12.5 m/s at an angle of 40° from horizontal, measured relative to the truck. If she makes the throw 2.8 seconds after the truck started moving, will she be able to hit Emma? Note that Emma is at rest due to exhaustion from their earlier fight and she cannot dodge the balut. - Julie throws a ball to her friend Sarah. The ball leaves Julie's hand a distance 1.5 meters above the ground with an initial speed of 22 m/s at an angle 61 degrees; with respect to the horizontal. Sarah catches the ball 1.5 meters above the ground. After catching the ball, Sarah throws it back to Julie. The ball leaves Sarah's hand a distance 1.5 meters above the ground, and is moving with a speed of 12 m/s when it reaches a maximum height of 23 m above the ground. What is the speed of the ball when it leaves Sarah's hand? The instant before the stone hits the ground below, it is traveling at a speed of 45 m/s. If Irina were to throw the other rock at a 40-degree angle below the horizontal from the cliff instead, with same initial speed of 10.0 m/s, what is the magnitude of the velocity of the stone just before it hits the ground?
