Chapter 40, Problem 4S
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The benefits of brushing the seedlings every day for a few weeks for their transition from the greenhouse to the field.
Introduction:
The thigmotropism is the response by the plants or their organs by the stimulus of touch. This response causes the growth of the plant in the direction of the stimulus of touch. The response is made when the plant organ senses the touch of an object, animal, and many more.

Engineers have designed a smaller version of such a container that can be used to seal off a small part of the plant. One version of this device, called a leaf chamber, is shown below. When a scientist uses this device on a plant, they don’t need to break the leaves off the branch or stem they are attached to. The leaf chamber makes an airtight seal around the stem or branch even though it is sticking out of the chamber.
Using this device, scientists detected the most change in O2 and CO2 levels inside the chamber when a leaf is in the chamber. They only detected a small change in O2 and CO2 levels in the chamber when a green stem was placed in the chamber. No change was detected when a root or a brown stem was placed in the chamber.
Why do you think a scientist would prefer not to remove the leaves from a tree or a plant in order to take these sorts of measurements?
Why is clay a challenging soil for plants to grow into?
Group of answer choices
The field capacity point is really low, causing water to seep through the soil quickly
Both the wilting point and field capacity are really low, causing the soil to be immediately oversaturated
The distance between field capacity and wilting point is extremely small, which makes the plants highly susceptible to changes in precipitation
It has a high wilting point, a lot of rain has to fall before plants can access the water
leaves fall off when growers place plastic sleeves to cover the plant because of poor circulation and the lack of oxygen causes the plants not to breathe. Even though, the sleeves are a temporary fit for transport and shipping, what other items do you think the growers can use instead of the plastic sleeves to help?

When there is already high soil nitrogen there is a very large cost to having rhizobial nodules. The rhizobia bacteria in the nodules fix nitrogen when there isn't enough in the soil, so when there is already high soil nitrogen there is no advantage for the pea plant to expend the extra energy housing the rhizobia. The rhizobia bacteria in the nodules use nitrogen when there isn't enough in the soil, so in conditions of high soil nitrogen the plant tries to exclude the rhizobia to keep the nitrogen for itself. When there is already high soil nitrogen there is no benefit to the plant to having rhizobial nodules, which can rob the plant of the high nitrogen supplies so that the rhizobia bacteria do not have to fix the nitrogen themselves.arrow_forward
