Concept explainers
Relative Risk and Odds Ratio In a clinical trial of 2103 subjects treated with Nasonex, 26 reported headaches. In a control group of 1671 subjects given a placebo, 22 reported headaches. Denoting the proportion of headaches in the treatment group by pt and denoting the proportion of headaches in the control (placebo) group by pc, the relative risk is pt/pc. The relative risk is a measure of the strength of the effect of the Nasonex treatment. Another such measure is the odds ratio, which is the ratio of the odds in favor of a headache for the treatment group to the odds in favor of a headache for the control (placebo) group, found by evaluating the following:
The relative risk and odds ratios are commonly used in medicine and epidemiological studies. Find the relative risk and odds ratio for the headache data. What do the results suggest about the risk of a headache from the Nasonex treatment?

- A group of health conscious researchers were interested in ways to lower blood pressure. The study consisted of 90 participants. 30 participants were randomly assigned to eat a heart healthy diet, 30 were randomly assigned to a heart healthy exercise routine, and 30 were randomly assigned to do nothing and serve as a control. After a month of their assigned intervention, participants' blood pressure was measured. Which statistical test should be used to compare the 3 intervention types on post-treatment blood pressure? df between= ? df within= ? df total= ?arrow_forwardYou are asked to design a study to investigate the effectiveness of the Atkins diet (IV = diet, DV = weight loss). Describe a study that would utilize an independent t test as the test statistic.arrow_forwardA random sample of 125 hypertensive and 150 normal senior citizens were asked if they read nutrition labels on food products. Results are presented below. (Check image) Is there an evidence of a significant difference between the proportions of hypertensive and normal senior citizens who read nutrition labels? Use a 5% level of significance.arrow_forward
- Social functioning is the ability for an individual to interact or adapt in a normal or usual way in social environments. Albert et al. (2007) asked if relatives of patients with OCD are as healthy as those in general healthy populations. They measured the social functioning of relatives using a 36-item survey with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible health) to 100 (best possible health). The mean score for the general healthy population was 77.43. Using the sample data, test whether there was a difference. Scores: 20, 60, 48, 92, 50, 82, 48, 90, 30, 68, 43, 54, 60, 62, 94, 67, 63, 85 State hypotheses 2. Set the criteria using α= 0.05 3. Calculate t 4. What should you conclude?arrow_forwardIn a test of the effectiveness of garlic for lowering cholesterol, 41 senior citizens were treated with garlic in a processed tablet form. Cholesterol levels were measured before and after the treatment. The changes in their levels of LDL cholesterol (in mg/dL) have an average (mean) of 3.8. Identify the sample, the population, the sample statistic, and the population parameter in this study.arrow_forwardAs an occupational health epidemiologist you are required to measure the effect of stress on the workers in your manufacturing plant. Two different tests previously developed to measure stress in industrial workers are selected: stress test alpha and stress test delta. The sensitivity and specificity of each test are shown below. Which test generates the greatest proportion of false negatives? Stress Test Alpha Stress Test Delta Sensitivity = 60% 75% M Specificity = 95% 90% Stress Test Alpha Stress Test Deltaarrow_forward

Adrian examined the calcium intake in three groups of individuals with varying levels of bone mineral density. Group 1 had low bone mineral density, Group 2 had moderate levels of bone mineral density and Group 3 had high levels of bone mineral density. In order to determine the mean differences between the groups on calcium intake what statistical test would be best used in this scenario? Why?arrow_forwardWhen a t-test is used to compare pre- and post-treatment data. What does the t-test reveal about the difference between baseline and treatment?arrow_forward
- Calculate one measure of effect size for this analysis and interpret the measure of effect size using specific IV and DV descriptors.arrow_forwardA clinical trial is conducted comparing a new pain reliever for arthritis to a placebo. Participants are randomly assigned to receive the new treatment or a placebo and the outcome is pain relief within 30 minutes. Of the 200 participants who received the new medication, 75 reported pain relief, while 60 out of the 200 participants who received the placebo reported pain relief. Is there a significant difference in the proportions of patients reporting pain relief? Run the test at a 5% level of significance. Give each of the following to receive full credit: 1) the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses; 2) the appropriate test; 3) the decision rule; 4) the calculation of the test statistic; and 5) your conclusion including a comparison to alpha or the critical value.arrow_forwardGiven sensitivity is 0.88, specificity is 0.95, and prevalence is 0.07, find the positive predictive value and negative predictive value.arrow_forward
