Relative Risk and Odds Ratio In a clinical trial of 2103 subjects treated with Nasonex, 26 reported headaches. In a control group of 1671 subjects given a placebo, 22 reported headaches. Denoting the proportion of headaches in the treatment group by pt and denoting the proportion of headaches in the control (placebo) group by pc, the relative risk is pt/pc. The relative risk is a measure of the strength of the effect of the Nasonex treatment. Another such measure is the odds ratio, which is the ratio of the odds in favor of a headache for the treatment group to the odds in favor of a headache for the control (placebo) group, found by evaluating the following:
The relative risk and odds ratios are commonly used in medicine and epidemiological studies. Find the relative risk and odds ratio for the headache data. What do the results suggest about the risk of a headache from the Nasonex treatment?

- The table below refers to a case control study on the association between sulfones and streptomycin drugs in the treatment of leprosy. Subjects were sampled based on their clinical change to treatment and then asked whether they had a high or low degree of infiltration. The degree of infiltration measures a type of skin damage. We will use clinical change response scores {-1, 0, 1, 2, 3}. The question of interest is whether degree of infiltration is associated with clinical change. (a) Compute the sample proportions of having a high degree of infiltration for each clinical change group? What type of variable is Clinical Change? (B)Conduct a Cochran-Armitage trend test at the 5% significance level to determine whether there is an association between degree of infiltration and clinical change. (C)Now, ignore the fact that clinical change is an ordinal variable. Conduct a chi-squared test for association between degree of infiltration and clinical change at the 5% significance…arrow_forwardPassive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been associated with growth suppression and an increased frequency of respiratory tract infections in normal children. Is this association more pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25 boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile (y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x). a. For the 18 girls, the coefficient of correlation between y and x was reported as r = –.50. Interpret - this result. b. Refer to part a. The study consisted of 90 participants. 30 participants were randomly assigned to eat a heart healthy diet, 30 were randomly assigned to a heart healthy exercise routine, and 30 were randomly assigned to do nothing and serve as a control. After a month of their assigned intervention, participants' blood pressure was measured. Which statistical test should be used to compare the 3 intervention types on post-treatment blood pressure? df between= ? df within= ? df total= ?arrow_forward
- A group of disabled women ages 65 and older were followed for several years. It was found that those who had a vitamin B12 deficiency were twice as likely to suffer from severe depressions than those who did not.a. Describe the type of study being performed.b. Albert et al. (2007) asked if relatives of patients with OCD are as healthy as those in general healthy populations. They measured the social functioning of relatives using a 36-item survey with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible health) to 100 (best possible health). The mean score for the general healthy population was 77.43. Using the sample data, test whether there was a difference. Scores: 20, 60, 48, 92, 50, 82, 48, 90, 30, 68, 43, 54, 60, 62, 94, 67, 63, 85 State hypotheses 2. Set the criteria using α= 0.05 3. Calculate t 4. What should you conclude?arrow_forward

- The drug OxyContin (oxycodone) is used to treat pain, but it is dangerous because it is addictive and can be lethal. In clinical trials, 259 subjects were treated with OxyContin and 232 of them developed nausea (based on data from Purdue Pharma L.P.). Use a 10% significance level to test the claim that the proportion of OxyContin users that develop nausea is different from 90%. Each time a child had an upper respiratory tract infection, treatment with either echinacea or a placebo was given for the duration of the illness. One of the outcomes studied was “severity of symptoms.” A severity scale based on four symptoms was monitored and recorded by the parents of subjects for each instance of upper respiratory infection. The peak severity of symptoms in the 337 cases treated with echinacea had a mean score of 6.0 (standard deviation 2.3). The peak severity of symptoms in the placebo group (np = 370) had a mean score of 6.1 (standard deviation 2.4). Test the mean difference for significance using an independent t-test. Discuss your findingsarrow_forward
