Chapter 4.2, Problem 2cT

Consider the following discussion between three students.

Student 1: “The string exerts a force that is tangent to the rim of spool A. This force has no component that points toward the center of the spool, so this force does not affect the acceleration of the center of mass."

Student 2: "I disagree. The acceleration of the center of mass of the spool is affected by the string. Any of the force not used up in rotational acceleration will be given to translation acceleration. This is why the acceleration of the center of mass of spool A is less than g."

Student 3: "The net force on spool A is the gravitational force minus the tension force. By Newton's second law, the acceleration of the center of mas is the net force divided by the mass. A force will have the same effect on the motion of the center of mass regardless of whether the force causes rotational motion or not."

With which student(s), if any, do you agree? Explain your reasoning.

In this assignment, the radius refers to the distance between the location where the force is applied and the axis of rotation. A ruler is initially at rest when a student briefly exerts a downward force on the right end, as shown. The magnitude of the force exerted by the student is less than the weight of the ruler. Assume that the pivot point is frictionless. Answer the following questions based on this description. Part A: 1. While the hand is pushing, but before the ruler begins to move, the tangential acceleration of the ruler is 2. While the hand is pushing, but before the ruler begins to move, the centripetal acceleration of the ruler is 3. While the hand is pushing, but before the ruler begins to move, the angular acceleration of the ruler is 4. At the instant the hand has stopped pushing, the tangential acceleration of the ruler is 5. At the instant the hand has stopped pushing, the centripetal acceleration of the ruler is 6. At the instant the hand has stopped pushing, the…
A 10 kg block of wood A is lying on a flat surface and has a string attached to it as shown on the figure below. Cylinder B has a mass of 20 kg. The coefficient of static friction between the flat surface and block of wood is 0.25. Determine the minimum mass that must be placed on block A to prevent motion.
The leg and cast in the figure below weigh 250 N, with the center of mass as indicated by the blue arrow in the diagram. The counterbalance w1 weighs 110 N. Determine the weight w2 and the angle a needed so that no force is exerted on the hip joint by the leg plus cast. Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. N Enter a number. is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error.° 40%
