Chapter 43, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The effects from damage to respiratory cilia.

Introduction:

Cilia are the hair-like locomotory projections that are present in certain cells that help in moving certain cells or substances inside the cells or outside the body. These hair-like projections are shorter than other locomotory organs called flagella. These locomotory organs are present generally on the surface of epithelial cells that lines the skin.

Explanation of Solution

The role of cilia in the human body is mostly related to locomotion of some or the other substances. It helps in moving the mucus that is a sticky viscous liquid secreted by the mucosal cells that line the entire internal organ. This mucus traps dirt, insects and certain micro-organisms that enter the human body either by air or by food. It lines the entire respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, digestive, and urinogenital tract.

Any damage caused to the cilia will cause damage to the mucosal lining also. So, if a damage is done to the cilia in the cells of the respiratory tract, it will cause a damage to the mucosal membrane of the respiratory tract. This in turn will increase the chances of lung infection, since the capability of the respiratory tract to clean trap and clean microorganisms will be offended.

Conclusion

A damage caused to respiratory cilia will result in the infection of lungs by various microorganisms.
