Calculation:

Let the width of old edition of newspaper be $x$ inches

Let the length of old edition of newspaper be $y$ inches

Given that a newspaper is $12\frac{1}{4}$ inches wide and $22$ inches long. This $1\frac{1}{4}$ inches narrower and half an inch longer than the old edition.

Therefore, we get

$12\frac{1}{4}=x-1\frac{1}{4}----(1)$

And

$22=y+0.5----(2)$

On solvingequation (1),

> $\begin{array}{l}12\frac{1}{4}=x-1\frac{1}{4}\\ \frac{49}{4}=x-\frac{5}{4}\\ x=\frac{49}{4}+\frac{5}{4}\\ x=\frac{44}{4}\\ x=11\end{array}$

On solving equation (2),

$\begin{array}{l}y=22-0.5\\ y=21.5\end{array}$

Hence, width of old version of newspaper is $11$ inches and length of old version of newspaper is $21.5$ inches
