Many different antigens are associated with the human red blood cells, and a few of them are of clinical importance. These include the antigens of the ABO group and those of the Rh group. An antigen commonly found on the human red blood cell membrane was first identified in the Rhesus monkey and came to be known as the Rh factor or the Rhesus factor.
