The given figure is the mouth.
Below are the features of the mouth are labeled as per the numbers given in the figure
- Lip:It can be seen through the eyes. They are mobile, soft. They serve for food intake and in the expression of speech and sound. They are tactile sensory organs.
- Hard palate:It is made up of 2 bones of facial bone. It is a thin horizontal bony plate. It is situated on the roof of the mouth. The hard palate is important for speech and feeding.
- Soft palate:It is the portion of the mouth’s palate. It is the back part of the roof of the mouth. The bone is absent in soft palate. It is accountable for closing the nasal passages during swallowing, and also for blocking the airways.
- Uvula:It is a fleshy hanging structure in the mouth. It also contains several serous glands, which produce thin saliva. The uvula restricts food from entering the nasal cavity. It also has importance in speech.
- Palatine Tonsil:Commonly, they termed as tonsils and occasionally faucial tonsils. They are situated on the right and left sides behind the throat. They are flesh-colored pinkish. The primary role is to trap the germs (viruses and bacteria) while breathing. They also help to battle infections.
- Tongue:The tongue is an organ in the mouth that is muscular. It is the major component of taste in the gustatory system. The upper surface of the tongue is coated with taste buds. It is sensitive and moist with saliva. Its main function is enabling speech in humans and vocalization in other animals. It also helps in chewing and swallowing the food.
- Vestibule:It is a slit-like space. It is surrounded externally by the cheeks and lips. It is surrounded internally by the teeth and gums. It receives the secretion from the parotid salivary glands.
