Introduction: In the skin (dermis and subcutaneous tissue), several kinds of mechanoreceptors are located. Mechanoreceptors play a role in the detection of touch, hearing, and provide information regarding body position and balance. The morphologically specialized receptors can be tonic (continuously activated) or phasic (intermittently activated).
