Chapter 44, Problem 14PIAT
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Based on the researcher’s result, the correctness of the hypothesis and explain the rationale behind it.

Introduction:

A beehive consists of three different types of bees, namely, a queen bee, male drones, and infertile female workers. Pheromones are the chemical substances, which are released by certain animals into the environment, which affects the activity of other animals. The pheromone produced by the queen bee is capable of attracting the worker and the drones, however, the growth of ovaries is retarded in the worker bees. In order to test the hypothesis, the researcher exposed the worker bees to the chemically synthesized pheromones.

The ovary development score for worker bees was recorded in this study. In the graph shown below, the higher score indicates for the full development of ovaries. Furthermore, *** signifies for the value of probability less than 0.001.

You have received a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study male signalling in peacock spiders. After your university takes most of that money for overhead costs, you now have a small amount left over to spend on peacock spider research over the next 3 years. What is the first question that you would focus on that you think would increase our understanding of peacock spider male displays the most? State a relevant hypothesis and explain briefly how you would go about testing it.
Serotonin has been shown to be sufficient to trigger the development of the gregarious form of the migratory desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria). What predictions must have been tested to arrive at this conclusion? You should know that you can inject serotonin as well as drugs that disable serotonin directly into nymphal locusts.
