Summary Introduction

To describe:

The evolutionary explanation for the inefficiency of parasites in controlling population size of winter moth.

Introduction:

Winter moth is an r-selected species because they have a short and unstable life span, they produce a large number of eggs during winters, and the population is controlled by the environment temperature.

Explanation of Solution

Egg of winter moth can tolerate the chilly winter temperature, but it needs a warm temperature for hatching. The mature populations of winter moth cannot survive in low temperature during winters, and it lead to death of male moth in population, hence controlling the mating process, and no reproduction occurs. Without matting female winter moth cannot lay eggs, thus winter breaks the life cycle of winter silk moth, and responsible for population control.

Selection of traits and adaption results in evolution; mostly species of winter month belongs to America and they all are winter sensitive species. One species of winter moth belong to Europe, and can tolerate low temperature in environment, but not the extreme cold.

Winter moth reproduces a large number of organisms, and makes a large population. Wasp and flies are the main parasites for the winter moth, but they cannot control their population size because the large population. Only cold environment plays a vital role in population control of winter moth.

Conclusion

Cold temperature during winter (November-march) can control the population size of winter moth.
