Chapter 44.4, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction

To explain: The effect on the rate of the blood filtration in the Bowman’s capsule, when the blood pressure in the afferent arteriole leading to a glomerulus is decreased.

Concept introduction: The change in the blood pressure in the glomerulus and Bowman’s capsule is regulated by the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system (RAAS). The secretion of this hormone in the juxtaglomerular apparatus causes the reabsorption of the water and ions in the kidney tubules. The enzyme renin is released in response to the decrease in the blood pressure around the afferent arterioles. The precursor angiotensinogen cleaves into angiotensin.

WHAT IF? Kidney failure is often treated by hemodialysis, in which blood diverted out of the body is filteredand then allowed to flow on one side of a semipermeablemembrane. Fluid called dialysate flows in the oppositedirection on the other side of the membrane. In replacingthe reabsorption and secretion of solutes in a functionalkidney, the makeup of the starting dialysate is critical. What initial solute composition would work well?
WHAT IF? Researchers found that a camel in the sunrequired much more water when its fur was shaved off, although its body temperature was the same. What canyou conclude about the relationship between osmoregulation and the insulation provided by fur?
3. Describe the process of urine formation in the kidney using all relevant structures of a nephron. How does osmolarity allow for water reabsorption? How and from where is filtrate formed?
