Question
Chapter 44.5, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction
To identify: The major symptom of the disorder in Conn’s syndrome, leading to an increase in the production of the aldosterone from the adrenal gland.
Concept introduction: The constriction of the blood capillaries is caused by the angiotensin hormone. It causes the increase in the blood pressure inside the vessels. The adrenal gland releases the aldosterone by the action of the hormone angiotenin II. The release of the hormone aldosterone causes the reabsorption of the sodium ions and water in the collecting duct.

WHAT IF? Propose an explanation for why defectsin a particular hormone cascade pathway observed inpatients typically affect the final gland in the pathwayrather than the hypothalamus or pituitary.
WHAT IF? Suppose a bird and a human both havegout. Why might reducing purine in their diets helpthe human much more than the bird?
WHAT IF? Suppose you are standing at the edge of acliff and suddenly slip, barely managing to keep yourbalance and avoid falling. As your heart races, you feela burst of energy, due in part to a surge of blood intodilated (widened) vessels in your muscles and an upwardspike in the level of glucose in your blood. Why mightyou expect that this “fight-or-flight” response requiresboth the nervous and endocrine systems?
