To interpret the data: To find the abnormal activity of pituitary or adrenal gland in a patient who used dexamethasone drug.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions, such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids found in humans namely, glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles.

- A scientist hypothesizes that the pancreas’s hormone production is controlled by neural stimuli. Which observation would support this hypothesis? Insulin is produced in response to sudden stress without a rise in blood glucose Insulin is produced in response to a rise in glucagon levels Beta cells express epinephrine receptors Insulin is produced in response to a rise in blood glucose in the brain.arrow_forwardFigure 16.14 Goiter, a disease caused by iodine deficiency, results in the inability of the thyroid gland to form T3 and T4 . The body typically attempts to compensate by producing greater amounts of TSH. Which of the following symptoms would you expect goiter to cause? a. Hypothyroidism, resulting in weight gain, cold sensitivity, and reduced mental activity. b. Hyperthyroidism, resulting in weight loss, profuse sweating and increased heart rate. C. Hyperthyroidism, resulting in weight gain, cold sensitivity, and reduced mental activity. d. Hypothyroidism, resulting in weight loss, profuse sweating and increased heart rate.arrow_forwardThe hormone insulin enhances the transport of glucose (sugar) from the blood into most body cells. Its secretion is controlled by a negative-feedback system between the concentration of glucose in the blood and the insulin-secreting cells. Therefore, which of the following statements is correct? A decrease in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn further towers blood glucose concentration. An increase in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn lowers blood glucose concentration. A decrease in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn increases blood glucose concentration. An increase in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn further increases blood glucose concentration. None of the preceding is correct.arrow_forward
- which of the following happens when a therapeutic synthetic hormone is introduced into the body to treat the patients natural hormone insufficiently? (select all that apply? Which observation would support this hypothesis? a. Insulin is produced in response to sudden stress without a rise in blood glucose. b. Insulin is produced in response to a rise in glucagon levels. c. Beta cells express epinephrine receptors. d. - Insulin and glucagon are controlled by negative feedback mechanisms. Put them in the right order from when you eat. a)Glucose enters the bloodstream faster than the cell can use it. b) Glucose levels rise. c) Beta cells of pancreas are stimulated to release insulin into blood. d) Cells take up glucose. e) Cells of the liver convert glucose to glycogen f) The level of glucose in blood stream returns to normal.arrow_forwardMelatonin is a hormone derived from serotonin. It is produced in the brain’s light-sensitive pineal gland. The pineal’s secretion of melatonin is depressed by nerve impulses that originate in the retina of the eye and other light-sensitive tissue in the body in response to light. Pineal function is involved in circadian rhythms, patterns of biochemical activity associated with light and dark, such as sleep/wake cycles. Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant, especially in the central nervous system. After serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is produced in the pineal gland, it is converted to 5-hydroxy-N-acetyltryptamine by N-acetyltransferase. 5-Hydroxy-Nacetyltryptamine is then methylated by O-methyltransferase. SAM is the methylating agent. With this information, draw the synthetic pathway of melatonin.arrow_forwardThe human body needs to maintain stable internal conditions and characteristics such as blood glucose level, calcium concentration, optimal temperature, water content, etc. This tendency to go to a state of equilibrium among variables, conditions and functions of the body is referred to as ___(1)____. In order to maintain it, systems in the body employ ____(2)_____ which dictates the increase or decrease of the level or amount of a condition or variable. For example, when the increased amount of a hormone triggers the production of a second hormone, it is called a ____(3)_____ feedback mechanism. Sometimes, the increased amount of a variable decreases or stops the production of a hormone. In this case, it is considered a ____(4)____ feedback mechanism. Two different hormones can be used to maintain homeostasis of a single variable. For example, the hormone ___(5)____ is used to store excess glucose from the blood into the liver and muscles as glycogen. The hormone…arrow_forward
