Chapter 45, Problem 10TYU
Summary Introduction

To interpret the data: To find the abnormal activity of pituitary or adrenal gland in a patient who used dexamethasone drug.

Concept introduction:

The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions, such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone.  Then the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids found in humans namely, glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles.

Human growth hormone is being researched as a potential anti-aging drug. What is the most likely way that would scientists produce large amounts of growth hormone?
c.  Draw a picture comparing and contrasting how each might cause its target cell to do this.  Don't look it up!  You have all the information you need from the notes to come up with a reasonable, logical hypothesis. d. If somebody develops hyperparathyroidism (the parathyroid glands produce too much PTH), do you expect that person's blood levels of calcium to be too high or too low as a result?  Explain. e. If somebody develops hyperparathyroidism, will their bones gain or lose density?
A hydrophilic peptide hormone is produced in the anterior pituitary gland located at the base of the brain.  The hormone targets specific cells in many parts of the body.  Which of the following best explains a possible mechanism that would enable the hormone to efficiently reach all the target cells in the body? A. Restate the question and record the right answer. B. Why is this the correct answer?
