To interpret the data: To find the abnormal activity of pituitary or adrenal gland in a patient who used dexamethasone drug.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions, such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids found in humans namely, glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles.

- Figure 37.14 Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive. Which of the conditions are the following two patients most likely to have? Patient A has symptoms including weight gain, cold sensitivity, low heart rate, and fatigue. Patient B has symptoms including weight loss, profuse sweating, increased heart rate, and difficulty sleeping.arrow_forwardInsulin therapy has all of the following effects, except:A. - Betty has a calcium poor diet and because of her age (menopause years) she is concerned about becoming hypocalcemic (low blood calcium). Once the blood levels of calcium start dropping, the body will compensate for hypocalcemia. Receptors continually feed the brain’s hypothalamus (blood-calcium regulatory center) information on calcium blood levels. The parathyroid gland will be stimulated to release parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH will stimulate osteoclast cells to break down bone and release the stored calcium to the blood, raising the calcium blood level. a. What is the stimulus?b. What is the control center?c. Identify the control center’s response to the stimuli?d. Does the response stop/reverse the stimuli or enhance the stimuli?e. Is the body’s response a negative or positive feedback?arrow_forwardPlsssssssssss helppppppp Scenario: A patients insulin pump is a computerized and connected device. She is worried about a medical hack. Could her pump be remotely broken into and could someone alter the doses of insulin she receives? Is the patient right to be worried?arrow_forward1. Which of the following accurately compares the role of glucagon and insulin in regulating blood glucose levels? a. Glucagon stimulates organs and tissues to increase their uptake of glucose, whereas insulin stimulates organs and tissues to release glucose. b. The primary function of both glucagon and insulin is to facilitate the uptake of glucose into body cells. c. Glucagon stimulates organs and tissues to release glucose, whereas insulin stimulates organs and tissues to increase their uptake of glucose. d. Glucagon reduces blood glucose levels via glycolysis, whereas insulin increases blood glucose levels via glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.arrow_forward
- There are many glands in the human body tasked with the job of regulating the body's metabolism, reproduction, growth, and sleep. Like the nervous system, the endocrine system is an information signal system. Rather than using the neurons and electrical signals, this system uses chemical messengers called hormones, each of which has its own unique function and triggers either an immediate response or a cascade of reactions. 1. explain how the endocrine system controls different functions/processes in the human body. Your response must mention at least 3 different processes controlled by the endocrine system and the hormones/anatomical structures involved.arrow_forwardFunctions of Various Hormones 1. Increases water reabsorption in the kidney tubules 2. Promotes the reabsorption of sodium by the kidneys to increase water reabsorption 3. Regulates secretion of hormones by anterior pituitary gland 4. Stimulates mitosis and promotes bone and muscle growth 5. Raises blood glucose level in response to long-term stress 6. Triggers fight-or-flight response for short-term stress Match four of the functions numbered above with the rmones given below. Please answer at your own words.arrow_forwardFigure 16.14 Goiter, a disease caused by iodine deficiency, results in the inability of the thyroid gland to form T3 and T4 . The body typically attempts to compensate by producing greater amounts of TSH. Which of the following symptoms would you expect goiter to cause? a. Hypothyroidism, resulting in weight gain, cold sensitivity, and reduced mental activity. b. Hyperthyroidism, resulting in weight loss, profuse sweating and increased heart rate. C. Hyperthyroidism, resulting in weight gain, cold sensitivity, and reduced mental activity. d. Hypothyroidism, resulting in weight loss, profuse sweating and increased heart rate.arrow_forwardThe hormone insulin enhances the transport of glucose (sugar) from the blood into most body cells. Its secretion is controlled by a negative-feedback system between the concentration of glucose in the blood and the insulin-secreting cells. Therefore, which of the following statements is correct? A decrease in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn further towers blood glucose concentration. An increase in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn lowers blood glucose concentration. A decrease in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn increases blood glucose concentration. An increase in blood glucose concentration stimulates insulin secretion, which in turn further increases blood glucose concentration. None of the preceding is correct.arrow_forward
