Concept explainers
To explain: The ways in which the detection of coliform using the membrane filtering method is preferable over the most probable number (MPN) method.
Introduction: Membrane filtering technique involves filtering a known volume of the sample using a special filter. It is sterile and made of nitrocellulose acetate. The water sample is filtered through the membrane and the filter is transferred to a solid media to detect the number of bacterial colonies.
Explanation of Solution
The membrane filter technique is more rapid whereas the MPN technique is more complicated. The results can be obtained in a few days in the membrane filter method whereas the MPN method needs several days.
The low possibility of contamination is observed in the membrane filter method and therefore, the result is more accurate. More than 100 ml of the sample could be analyzed. Only a small amount of sample (1 ml) can be tested using the MPN method. These are some of the advantages of membrane filtering technique over the MPN method in the detection of coliforms.
